Co-Authored Post, "A Video Movement?"

  1. How can video make a measurable difference in people's lives? Video presents the possibility to create the most meaningful messages. It is a medium that does not rely exclusively on words. There are visual elements that the viewer and presenter benefit from. It is a matter of showing versus telling. Evidence of the effectiveness of video is something people witness daily. It is virtually impossible to live a single day without watching a video, whether that video is two seconds, or two hours. The only thing needed, then, to make a difference in people’s lives is the message. The context of the grand speech, the leader’s call, is everywhere. Everywhere becomes the context for a leader’s speech. That is the benefit of video that cannot be ignored. Video is ubiquitous. Realizing is all the motive people need to record their call for change.

  2. What can video do in changing people’s views that words alone cannot?

Words are powerful and if they are said correctly they can produce a impactful message. Yet, some things are better understood in pictures or videos. This is because images and videos tend to hold more emotion and they can be interpreted in various ways. Words are more set in stone and they mean the same thing throughout a language. Whereas, videos and images can hold different a meaning to each individual. Therefore, if you are trying to get your point across and change an individuals view a video might help the individual understand your point. In addition, we all learn in different ways. For example, some individuals learn best by reading and writing others prefer to view an image or a video. For this reason, if you are trying to change people’s views you could try different ways of approaching the issue. The videos could contain powerful images that portray your message, images that touch ones heart, and clips of an example of what our view looks like. This allows individuals to fully understand your stance. If they still aren’t convinced, at least they were informed about their opposing stance and they firmly understand their stance as well. In conclusion, words, visuals, and audios are the best way to get a message across because it touches all of our senses. As humans, we don’t just want the logistics and the math of a certain stance, although it is essential, we also want to feel the emotion of the stance and connect with the problem. Videos and images are a good tool to connect both logitics and emtions into one.

  1. How exactly can social media and video be the tools for change that the world needs?

    1. Social media and videos are beneficial to the overall campaign. Here, you can express your message in a way that’s different from words. You can show your experience first hand, and as well show you doing what you love. This here shows an inspiration to get people out and do what you’re advising. I’m a keen user on posting my endeavors to social media. My main approach, however, is just to show to family and friends, but you can use this as a tool to express your message to a more broad audience. With social media, you can use this like a file of pictures and videos that people can look at whenever they’re free. Videos and social media also give the viewer an example of what to expect before they put themselves in a situation. This can be beneficial overall by giving your viewer an idea of what to expect. Social media is a platform that is widely used across the world. More people use social media every day. Why not use this to your advantage, and show what you want to show through social media? This will help your overall cause and further spread the message that you are trying to spread.

  2. What is the most inspiring thing about a YouTube video?

    1. There are many inspiring aspects of a YouTube video. Depending on the genre of video, its sole purpose could be to inspire someone. By seeing someone do something on camera, it could make the person want to do the same. Seeing the impact and emotions shown through a video can be much more inspiring than just reading words. Talking on camera, your audience is able to see facial expressions and emotions, which allows them to form a sense of empathy. Watching a video of someone doing something in real time makes viewers more interested because the audience knows that the material is authentic. As compared to words, it is much harder to “fake” something when you are on camera. Therefore, it makes the YouTube video inspiring to the audience because they are watching someone take on an action. I am far more inspired to follow someone’s actions after watching a video that persuaded me to believe in something or take a stance/action against something. Sitting in front of a camera and talking about why you believe in something and then posting it on YouTube could get audiences across the world to view your video and change the minds of many. Inspiring videos could make a difference in the lives of many. Whether the video is a ten second video or a three hour long video, it could inspire others around you in many different ways.

  3. What historic tools of leadership does a YouTube video best compare to?

    1. The classic podium is the equivalent of the YouTube video that leaders can rely on today. Historically, movements began with the leader’s courage measured through his or her ability to give a compelling speech. That compelling speech was the change needed. That compelling speech was the motive needed to create a new world. Grand efforts based on overwhelming, global challenges is also an example of a historic tool of leadership. While a video is not devoid of a grand effort, what is different today is the challenge, or challenges that leaders and citizens face. Challenges certainly do not lessen, but they do take on different forms requiring different tools.

  4. What is the most important consideration a leader must make when planning a video?

I believe that the best way to plan a video as a leader is to understand that there are multiple steps and things to consider. The first step is to brian storm and think of multiple ideas. As a leader there could be more people involved within the video, so think of people who could benefit this video. When considering others, this allows you as a leader to develop relationships with others. Another step in creating a video is to think of things that interest you as a leader. When something interests you, you are more passionate about it. When others listen to your video, they can see if you have passion or not. It expresses how interested it is and how your knowledge can draw the audience in. The video should also be considered with the lighting, angel, and clothing worn. There are many things into making a good video. The flow is important as well. Videos are so important as you can hear how the leader is speaking. Tone of voice is extremely important because people can hear how important this video truly is. In this new generation, videos are becoming more popular. Adults and children scroll through videos everyday and there are certain things that interest people. The most important thing in creating a video is being engaging. If the video is engaging from the beginning or looks creative, more people are going to watch it. As a speaker creating the video, starting the video out with a hook to draw the viewers in. This allows the viewer to find an interest and develop the urge to listen and watch the video. The brightness on the video shows importance as well. It is important to post to a platform where you will get the most viewers on that topic. The audience you are trying to reach will determine what platform this video should be posted on. As a leader wanting people to see how important this topic is, it needs to be appropriate. Attire needs to be appropriate along with vocabulary. The vocabulary used in the video can show respect that the viewers are understanding. There are many people that get offended with specific words, in a leaders video, keep all conflicts aside and talk about an engaging topic to you and to the viewers. Overall, I think that videos show a huge purpose into a leadership style. There are a lot of promotion videos for many leaders.

  1. What must be shown in a YouTube video for people to change their long-held views? In part, people must see something new. Without witnessing something new, people often ignore a message. Therefore, for anyone to truly change someone’s mind, there must be a new idea present. A new idea is the most important consideration in leadership. It is the most important element of a good YouTube video. Audiences must realize early that they are presented with a new message, a new way of looking at an issue, a new way of looking at the world, a new way of looking at themselves.

  2. Are the words or the setting more essential in a video intended to make a difference? The setting is a bit more important when it comes to making a difference through a YouTube video. People frequently visit YouTube to witness harrowing things. Infrequently, people visit YouTube for listening to someone solely.

  3. Is it better to have edited or unedited videos when a person wants to make a difference?

    1. To me, the answer is unedited video for one reason, authenticity. I believe that an unedited video is better when someone wants to make a difference because in real life, you can not edit what you say or what happens, so when making a video, an unedited video gives more of a real life feel, more authentic. While there are some advantages to edited videos, I believe an unedited video is more natural and gives the viewer a feel that they are truly getting to know the video-maker. While part of the video could be scripted, it comes off as more spontaneous and could come from the heart if someone is trying to make a difference. A new app called BeReal is even adopting this approach. Edited pictures are not allowed on this app because they are promoting authenticity. This standard can be applied to a video, unedited is more authentic.

  4. What gets the most attention in a YouTube video and why?

The individual speaking or directing any video is a foremost consideration for getting attention. People are fascinated by interesting figures. People are fascinated by knowledgeable individuals. Therefore, the thing that gets the most attention in a YouTube video is the speaker. This realization should comfort people. It does not take an expensive set or expensive tools to get attention with a YouTube video. One just needs to be likable. All have the ability to be this.

  1. Is a YouTube video the modern equivalent of the historic leader’s motivational speech? A YouTube video certainly parallels historic speeches, but the audience number is a critical difference. YouTube videos have the potential to reach far more audiences than one was able to historically. There was always a feeling of privilege to be present when a respected leader spoke. That privilege can still be felt wholly through video. The exclusiveness of the leader’s speech should not be a consideration of quality. The opposite should be true. The availability of a leader’s speech should be the foremost consideration of quality.

  2. What is the most inspiring thing about a YouTube video and why? The most inspiring thing about a YouTube video is the speaker. People are interesting. People create the change needed, often through subtle, but powerful means. A word spoken with the right heart and mind can deliver the most significant motivation. The genuineness of the speaker transcends any platform. It does not matter where one delivers that speech, so long as it is delivered in a compassionate, earnest means. YouTube videos make it possible for everyone, more than ever, to lead. The benefit is change.
